I actually started my love for makeup when I was a little girl. I still remember riding my bike up to CVS with a couple of my grade school friends and getting the flavored lip glosses that cost about $3 a piece and at that time it was so expensive!  I then graduated to buying Revlon products which at the time were the best I could afford.  I would try different looks and then also sneak into my mom’s makeup collection and see what else I could try on.  I remember that one of my staples use to be a Revlon quad that had a black eyeshadow and a gray one that I use to use almost everyday!  As for my hair I would always put “Sun-In” in it (not sure if anyone remembers that product but it lightens hair with the heat of the sun)  I was not allowed to color my hair until I was almost 18 so I would just put Sun-In in it and it would gradually get lighter but it would look orange…. eww!!  So not what Im looking forward to!

So as I grew older I knew I wanted to become a makeup artist!  That was my true passion but as a good Indian girl does – she follows what her parents want her to do.  So I started college and started on my Bachelors of Business.  I probably changed my major a dozen times (even to Fine Arts for a bit – but I knew that would not be proper with my parents) but finally graduated with a double major in Marketing and Management.  As I was in college I started to work part time at a dept store at the Prescriptives cosmetics counter.  This is where I started to learn the ins and outs of the makeup world. I stayed there for a bit but I knew MAC was calling my name one day.  I started to cross train and sold cosmetics for Chanel and Dior. I really enjoyed myself and knew that this is what made me happy.

I spent about 2 years working at the dept store and then when I graduated college I had to get a “professional” job.  So I started my business career and was a consultant for about 4 years.  In those 4 years I pretty much worked for the money and to make others happy…something no one should ever do!  BUT at the same time I had built my portfolio with some great makeup pictures and learned some wonderful makeup tips from some great MAC Artists.  It helped that I was at the MAC store almost every other day!  I was probably one of their best customers! So after I had built my portfolio and made some friends at MAC I decided to work for MAC part time.   This was my escape, my happiness, my dream!  I was working for MAC and I loved every moment of it!

After about 2 years with MAC I was ready to get married!  Which meant I had to leave the Washington DC area and move to Chicago. I ended up leaving MAC and went back to the professional career which again was something that I didnt want to do but kinda had to since I was a good Indian wife and a professional! Why did I waste all my money on college if I was not going to pursue what I studied?  Well let me tell you one thing, having a degree was a great idea for me!  Without my degree I would never have had the knowledge to start my own business – which is what I have today.

In the last few years I decided to leave the professional world of working from 9-5 – leave the world of 8 by 8 cubicles – and leave the world of answering to someone else and do what makes me happy.  What makes me happy? Being with my beautiful family and doing what I enjoy – making others beautiful and happy! Every bride I work with always is such a joy and I am so privileged to be apart of their special day.  I love that I only work when I want to and I can spend extra time with my babies.

There has been so many changes in my life in the last few years, people that I loved and were close to have passed away with regrets that they didnt do what they wanted to in life and I never want to be one of those people.  If you can – which Im sure you can – always do what you love and you will forever be happy.  Dont get influenced by others and dont let others rule your life – do what makes you happy (of course use common sense!)

Today I have a very successful Makeup and Hair business and I am started to teach classes. I am very happy with my work and Im happy that I can teach my kids that you dont have to follow the path that every other person takes, you can choose your own path in life and still be successful   Always keep smiling because there is always someone there to help you along the way.

Her secret was….

Mix Turmeric Powder with Sour Cream (Equal parts) and massage that into your skin!!  Cheap and awesome for your skin!!  Then she said she never uses soap on her face – ever!  So then I asked her how often she used this mixture and she told me as often as you would like.

Here are the benefits of Turmeric Powder:

Reduces Pigmentation

Plagued with pigmentation?
Turmeric can help even out your skin tone and colour. Simply apply a little
turmeric mixed with cucumber juice or lemon to the affected area. Leave on for fifteen minutes or more, and wash off. Do this everyday, and gradually you will notice your skin colour returning to normal.

Softens the Body

Turmeric is a wonderful body scrub, which is why Indian brides apply a
turmeric and gram flour (besan) mix to their entire body, the morning of the wedding. It leaves your skin soft, smooth and glowing. Of course, a single application will not really make that much of a difference. Do this regularly, and watch your skin change for the better – much better.

Makes the Skin Supple

If you are planning a pregnancy, apply a mixture of
turmeric and malai or
turmeric and curd to your stomach and waist before going for a bath. Leave it on for fifteen minutes, and wash off. If desired, you could even apply this mixture after bathing. After you have washed off the soap, apply the malai and haldi mixture, leave it on for five minutes, and wash off only with water. Gently, wipe your stomach with the towel. The sooner you start this routine, the more supple and elastic your skin will become, and after giving birth, you will not be left with unsightly stretch marks.

Another secret that I got from another person that was in her late 30s but looked like she was in her early 20s was….

Take 1/2 a lemon and dip it into some sugar and use this as a scrub all over your face.  Use the lemon and go in circular motions around your face – the lemon’s acid will lift the dead skins while the sugar sloughs it off!

Using this two secrets will help your skin regain that baby softness and youthful look

NARS – Eyeshadows

All NARs eyeshadows are highly pigmented and go on smooth – a little goes a long way!!

These eye shadows are a bit expensive and come in either a duo or in single eye shadows.  You just need a little bit of the color to make it pop so even though the price is high they will definitely last you a long time.

NARS Lipsticks

These lipsticks are small and compact and they glide on very easily.  They have a little bit of a flavor but nothing overpowering and they feel really good on lips!  No SPF though

NARS Foundation

I have used the NARS Sheer Matte Finish and it had a nice airy feel to it. Its a bit runny and doesnt come with a pump which I didnt like.  Also, after a while it tended to go a little blotchy on my skin.  I would pass on this product and stick with the MAC Studio Finish Liquid.  The MAC one has a SPF too and goes on matte and covers VERY well!
